SIGNS YOUR CALBE HAS FAILED
The door hangs crooked
One side drops lower than the other and the door looks lopsided in the opening. A cable on that side has snapped or jumped its drum.
A loud pop, then the door won't open
Cables carry the full weight when the opener runs. When one lets go it pops loudly and the door stalls or refuses to move.
Frayed or broken cable strands
Look at the cables running down each side. Any visible fraying, kinking, or broken strands means the cable is failing and needs replacing, not repairing.
The door came off its tracks
A failed cable can pull the door off-track. Don't force it, running an off-track door can bend the tracks and damage the panels.
Rust or corrosion on the cable
Salt air in Hampton Roads eats galvanized steel cable from the outside in. Rust streaks or a stiff, discolored cable mean it's fatiguing early.
What to expect
We inspect the whole lift system.
A cable rarely fails alone. We check the drums, springs, and tracks so we fix the cause, not just the symptom.
We quote in writing, before we start.
You get the full price up front, cables, labor, and any off-track reset needed, with no surprise charges at the end.
We replace both cables in stainless.
We install corrosion-resistant stainless-steel cable in matched pairs, so the coast doesn't claim the second one a month later.
We re-tension, align, and test.
We wind the cables to spec, reset the door on its tracks if needed, and cycle it fully so it runs level and safe before we leave.
BUILT FOR THE COAST
Why Cables Fail Faster in Hampton Roads
Salt air is hard on steel
Standard galvanized cables corrode from the humidity and salt air off the water. Once the outer strands rust and weaken, the cable frays and snaps well before it should. It's the number-one cause of early cable failure we see here.
We upgrade to stainless standard
We replace with stainless-steel cable that resists coastal corrosion, so your repair actually lasts. We also check the drum and tension, since a rough drum or a bad previous repair will chew through a new cable fast.
A snapped cable and a broken spring often go together. If yours failed because of a spring, see our garage door spring repair service, we’ll handle both in one visit.
Stop Using the Door
Garage door cables run right alongside springs wound under extreme tension. A cable repair done wrong, or attempted without the right tools, can release that force and cause serious injury. A cable that snapped can also leave the door unbalanced and ready to drop. Keep the door closed and let a trained tech handle it. We’re usually there same-day.

Common Questions About Garage Door Cable
Can a frayed cable be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Any visible fraying, kinking, or broken strands means replacement. A cable carries the full weight of the door, so once the strands start going there’s no safe way to repair it, it gets swapped for a new one.
Do you replace both cables if only one broke?
Yes, we recommend it. Both cables wear at the same rate, so if one frayed or snapped, its partner is already fatigued. The cost of the second cable is small compared to another service call in a few months.
Why do garage door cables snap?
The common causes here are corrosion from coastal salt air, a rough or damaged drum cutting into the wire, improper tension left by a previous repair, or the door being forced past its track range. We check all of these on every cable job so it doesn’t happen again.
How long does a cable repair take?
If the cable simply needs replacing and the springs are healthy, usually under an hour. If it came off because of a spring or drum failure, plan on closer to a couple of hours, we don’t leave until every related part is in spec and the door cycles clean.
My door came off the tracks. Can you fix that too?
Yes. A snapped cable often pulls the door off-track, and we reset it as part of the repair. Don’t try to run or force an off-track door in the meantime, it can bend the tracks and damage the panels.
How fast can you get here?
Most cable calls across Hampton Roads are same-day. A broken cable leaves the door unsafe to operate and your car stuck, so we prioritize getting a tech out quickly.
